The Stone Container pulp plant near Missoula withdraws ground water at a rate of 23 million gallons per day. Of this amount, 4 million gallons is returned to the Clark Fork River after cooling, 19 million gallons goes to storage ponds, and 1.9 million gallons evaporate.
